What kind of Husband will our son's grow up to be?
It was a picture-perfect evening by the campfire on one of Southern California's beautiful beaches. My precious three-year old boy and I were all snuggled up in a blanket watching the sun set over the sea. The waves gently lapped the shore and a young couple walked past us hand in hand obviously in love.
My
little boy thought for a minute and turned to me with his sweet little
face, "Mommy will you marry me when I grow up?" It was one of those
moments that will be engraved
in my heart forever. How do I break the news to him that mommies can't
marry their sons? Maybe I should have waited to tell him.
I will never
forget how my heart ached as I watched tears well up in his big blue
eyes and roll slowly down
his kissable, chubby cheeks. I treasure that memory because it was in
that "mommy moment" that I realized the influence that God had given me
in my son's life. That night I got down on my knees and made a promise
to God that I would use
whatever time He gave me with my son to prepare him to become a man who
knows how to love a wife.
It has been sixteen years since that magical
moment on the beach. My son is now nineteen and my training time with
him is coming to an end.
We still talk about his future bride often and even though we do not
know her name yet, we have been praying for her and preparing him to be
her husband from the time he was a little boy.
